FIRE SAFETY
Please see information below on smoke alarms.  It cannot be emphasized enough the importance of having working smoke alarms on EVERY level of your home.  Every home also requires a working carbon monoxide alarm.  The Hawkins-Gignac Act of Ontario (https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/s13014) made carbon monoxide alarms mandatory near sleeping areas in all Ontario homes.  It is recommended to install a carbon monoxide detector on every floor for optimal protection.

HOW TO PREVENT CHIMNEY FIRES
Do you have a wood-burning appliance/chimney in your home?  Creosote is a byproduct of burning wood, and even a thin layer of creosote can ignite and cause a dangerous chimney fire.  Regular cleaning of your chimney (once a year) will reduce the amount of creosote in your chimney and should greatly reduce the risk of any chimney fires in the future.  It is also important to make sure that the chimney cap is in good conditions and that there are no gaps or holes in the flue.
